Skills training at Longford Academy
GML Senior Consultants Anna Leeson and Shikha Swaroop recently participated in the Longford Academy’s Autumn Practical Building Conservation course in Tasmania. They reflect on their experience and the valuable knowledge gained.
The Longford Academy’s six-day Practical Building Conservation course, held at the World Heritage-listed Woolmers and Brickendon Estates in Tasmania, provided a comprehensive introduction to the practical aspects of building conservation. Topics covered included the documentation of works, addressing damp and salt extraction, lime-based materials, diagnosing timber decay and repair needs, and working with roofing and metals.
“Attending the Longford Academy in Tasmania was a brilliant experience that broadened our understanding of traditional conservation methods and the challenges in correctly identifying and addressing conservation issues at historic sites,” said Anna and Shikha.
The hands-on workshops were particularly valuable, offering opportunities to develop skills in lime slaking, rendering, soldering, diagnosing timber defects, and managing salt and damp. “Working with lime mortar on historic brick and stone surfaces taught us how to ensure both breathability and durability in conservation practices.”
The tutors, highly knowledgeable in their fields, guided participants through each process while explaining the historical significance of these techniques. Theory and discussion complemented the practical sessions, providing a well-rounded learning experience.
“Spending the week at Woolmers and Brickendon Estates, surrounded by the living history of early European settlement, was a valuable experience. Contributing to the conservation efforts at Woolmers and integrating these lessons into our work at GML has been incredibly rewarding. The experience has also deepened our appreciation for traditional trade skills and the craftspeople who continue these important practices.”
To top it all off, Anna and Shikha were treated to the breathtaking sight of the Aurora Australis during their time in Tasmania.
Shikha and Anna’s time at the Longford Academy enhances GML’s established expertise in built heritage conservation, showcasing our continued depth and capability in this field.
