Grassdale Aboriginal Cultural Values Assessment

Cultural Values Assessment

In collaboration with Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation

Grassdale and Branxholme

Many of the Gunditjmara cultural values associated with the Grassdale area and immediate surrounds, including land, water and sky, are intangible.

The Grassdale Aboriginal Cultural Values Assessment was compiled by GML in collaboration with Gunditj Mirring Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation with the purpose of identifying Gunditjmara cultural values for the Grassdale exploration area in western Victoria.

Cultural values are understood as relating to all aspects of Country, People and Culture. Identifying and protecting cultural values contributes to a greater sense of wellbeing for community and for individuals. Many of the Gunditjmara cultural values associated with the Grassdale area and immediate surrounds, including land, water and sky, are intangible. They also relate to the contemporary and ongoing period and recognise that Aboriginal culture is a fluid and developing concept.

The main objective of this project was the identification and collation of tangible and intangible Aboriginal cultural values using ethnographic information, historical accounts and archaeological assessments into a single report that can be used by Gunditjmara. The truth-telling investigation was informed and shaped by consultation with Gunditjmara Elders, and speaks to the survival and resilience of Gunditjmara.

The cultural values and knowledge within the report belongs to Gunditjmara, and they are able to use the report for future projects and as a resource to help support the protection of heritage places within Country.
