Public Art for the Northern Beaches Coast Walk

Works to complete the landmark ‘Northern Beaches Coast Walk’ are currently underway, with the spotlight turning to the development of public art for the project.
Northern Beaches Council wants the Coast Walk to be an unforgettable experience for locals and visitors (check out the Channel 9 News story below). GML Heritage is excited to be developing a Strategic Plan for Public Art on the Coast Walk to celebrate the natural and cultural environment and the area’s vibrant, creative communities. There are rich stories associated with the area’s Aboriginal heritage, natural landscape, beach culture, and history.
A new mega-walking track will connect the Northern Beaches coastline and it's hoped the panoramic views will entice even more visitors to the shores. #9News | http://9News.com.au

Community Consultation
Community consultation sessions are currently underway to inform the vision for public art on the Coast Walk, including pop-up sessions, an online survey, or a feedback form. Community feedback will help to identify key issues, ideas, stories and some of the places that local people think are special.
Weekend pop-up sessions have seen over 100 people complete surveys and document their memories, along with insight into how they use the Coast Walk now and in the future. The final pop-up session is in Dee Why on 29 July 2018.

Who’s Involved?
GML is leading a cross disciplinary team with skills in history, urban planning, and public art, including our Context colleagues, and sub-consultants JOC Consulting and Insite Land Solutions. Members of the Public Art Trail Working Group (such as Tony Geddes, pictured with GML Project Manager, Emma McGirr) also generously gave of their time at the pop-up sessions. The project will enable the Northern Beaches Council to make decisions about public art installations on the Coast Walk for years to come.
The Coast Walk will eventually be a continuous 36km pathway from Palm Beach to Manly. It will play a vital role in connecting communities through art and culture within the newly formed Northern Beaches Council, home to around 260,000 people.
