Calga Aboriginal Cultural Landscape is State Heritage Listed
The Calga Aboriginal Cultural Landscape is listed on the State Heritage Register, The Hon Minister Don Harwin announced on Wednesday. Congratulations to the Darkinjung Local Aboriginal Land Council, and the Australian Walkabout Wildlife Park for their tenacity and courage in committing to this long struggle to protect a significant Aboriginal place.
In 2015, GML CEO, Sharon Veale and GML Principal, Dr Tim Owen were expert witnesses at the Land and Environment Court, on behalf of the Australia Walkabout Wildlife Park. It resulted in a landmark decision to reject an expansion of sand mining at Calga, as it threatened a significant Aboriginal women’s site. Following this, GML prepared the Calga Aboriginal Women’s Site Cultural Heritage Assessment report.
At GML we are delighted with the outcome. The announcement recognises the importance of Aboriginal cultural heritage and the formally protects the significant values associated with the Calga Women’s site.
