Celebrating excellence at the National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards

In May, GML joined industry peers to celebrate the outstanding achievements in natural, built, Aboriginal and cultural heritage at this year’s National Trust (NSW) Heritage Awards in Sydney.

The ceremony included keynote addresses by former NSW Premier Bob Carr, now Chair of the Australian Heritage Council, and The Hon Penny Sharpe, NSW Minister for Heritage.

GML was proud to have two projects shortlisted this year. The Blacktown Native Institution Conservation Management Plan was recognised in the Aboriginal Heritage category. Developed in collaboration with the Dharug Strategic Management Group, the CMP supports the ongoing care and conservation of a place of deep cultural significance on Dharug Country.

The Historic Heritage Bushfire Vulnerability Assessment Framework was shortlisted in the Resources and Publications category. Delivered in partnership with the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the framework helps integrate heritage considerations into bushfire risk planning across the state.

The wide range of finalists and winners showcased the depth and diversity of work being done to safeguard NSW’s heritage. These projects play a vital role in preserving our shared history and unique places for future generations.

A special mention to Steven Barry from Transport for NSW, recipient of the Young Achiever Award. As a heritage specialist and lead author of the Sustainable Heritage Buildings Guide, Steven is helping address the challenges of adapting historic buildings in a changing climate. GML was proud to sponsor the Young Achiever Award for the second year, supporting the next generation of heritage professionals.

Warm congratulations also to Sheridan Burke, former Partner and Director of GML, on receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award. Sheridan’s distinguished career spans government, NGOs, and the private sector, including roles such as Deputy Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW and Vice President of ICOMOS. Her contributions have had a lasting impact on the heritage profession.
