Department of Defence

LGA: Mulwala, NSW Riverina

The Mulwala Homestead Precinct (MHP) is a place of Commonwealth Heritage value and is located within an active Defence site. The MHP is a large pastoral property dating from the late nineteenth century and is associated with the growth and development of the Riverina region.

GML Heritage was engaged to assist Defence and the site managers, Thales Australia, to develop a strategic approach to the long term conservation and management of the MHP. An immediate program of intensive conservation, maintenance and stabilisation works was undertaken between January and June 2015.

The project involved a rapid assessment of the homestead and outbuildings to prepare a schedule of conservation works. This was finalised in partnership with the specialist heritage builders, Sydney Restoration Company. At the same time, archival recording, 3D terrestrial scanning and interpretation planning was undertaken. The project successfully secured significant historic building fabric with a focus on water management to slow the deterioration of vulnerable fabric. GML also monitored the on-site maintenance and stabilisation works.

A summary report and cyclical maintenance plan were prepared and the works took into account the Indigenous and historical archaeological potential of the site.

As the MHP is not accessible to the public, interpretation initiatives with a focus on digital media, including innovative 3D recording methods, were used to maintain and enliven the site’s ongoing connection with the community.

Defence recognised the Commonwealth Heritage values of the place and the need to comply with their responsibilities under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Act 1999. Defence has fulfilled its obligations and protected the heritage values of MHP for future generations.
