We won’t be celebrating Australia Day on January 26

This year GML Heritage and Context are doing something different. We are encouraging our employees to celebrate the Australia Day holiday on a different date.

Australia Day is meant to be a national celebration, a day when all Australians can reflect on what makes them proud to be Australian. Yet for the majority of Indigenous Australians, and many non-Indigenous Australians, 26 January is not a day to celebrate—it marks the beginning of British invasion and the survival of violence and trauma caused by colonisation.

At GML Heritage and Context, we advocate truth-telling and recognise and respect the strength and resilience of Australia’s First Nations peoples—past, present and future. As allies, colleagues and friends, we stand by and support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
