Sharing insights on Melbourne’s heritage
GML recently partnered with Open House Melbourne and the City of Melbourne to present Open Studio as part of consultation for the Draft Melbourne Heritage Strategy.
This unique event offered students from architecture, urban planning, heritage and related disciplines an inside look at a professional heritage practice and an opportunity to engage with the City’s key heritage priorities.
The visit provided a chance to share the breadth of GML’s work in Victoria and our approach to conserving and interpreting heritage places—while reflecting on the positive impact of our work in shaping heritage outcomes across the state.
Students were able to contribute their insights on Melbourne’s evolving heritage strategy, enriching the discussion with thoughtful questions and fresh perspectives.
At a separate event as part of consultation activities, GML historian Dr Helen Doyle joined a panel discussion at Trades Hall to explore the many layers of Melbourne’s rich history and heritage.
Led by Tania Davidge, Executive Director of Open House Melbourne, Helen joined fellow panelists Jason Eades, Director of Aboriginal Melbourne at the City of Melbourne, and Mark Wang, CEO of the Museum of Chinese Australian History, to explore the stories that have shaped the city—both the visible heritage woven into the streetscape and the lesser-known narratives often left untold. The panel reflected on how storytelling can deepen our connection to place and offer new perspectives on Melbourne’s evolving identity.
GML was delighted to be part of the engagement for the Draft Melbourne Heritage Strategy, and to support ongoing conversations about the future of heritage in Melbourne.
