Conversations about Collections: GML Sponsors 2018 ASHA Conference

GML is proud to be a gold sponsor of the 2018 joint Conference of Australasian Society for Historical Archaeology (ASHA) and Australasian Institute for Maritime Archaeology (AIMA). This year, the conference is being held in Parramatta, Sydney, providing a focus for maritime and terrestrial archaeology in an urban environment. The theme is ‘The Clearing House’.

Facilitated by our very own Dr Jennifer Jones-Travers, GML is sponsoring the ‘Collections’ session. Jen’s presentation is about capturing and sharing archaeological data for the future, which relates to work GML has just completed for the City of Parramatta. Jen is also hosting a tour of the City of Parramatta’s Heritage Centre, to showcase the collection and storage of artefacts. Jen will also present the preliminary results of excavations at Newmarket Stables, Randwick, in the ‘Three Minute Speed Trials’.

Jane McMahon, GML Senior Heritage Consultant, is presenting ‘Interpreting Archaeology: Theory and Practice’. It draws upon her experience working at GML on a wide range of archaeological excavation and interpretation projects, and current research that explores theoretical approaches to museum-based object display. Jane’s paper will reflect on practice and encourage conversations about creative interpretation.

The event promises to generate new perspectives and insights about the future of heritage.
