Gomeroi Traditional Lands—Not To Be Mined
GTC Elder Neville Sampson stood at one of the grinding groove places, which will now remain within it's correct cultural place on Country.
The NSW government has announced that the Shenhua open cut coal mine license has been withdrawn.
The Watermark Mountain area contains places, values and locations that are integral to culture, health, and social well-being of the GTC. The place is within their native title claim area, which has been accepted for registration by the Federal Court.
Over the past few years, the GTC have fought Shenhua, the NSW government and the Federal government, through an exhaustive legal process. All efforts have been overturned, despite the Federal Minister’s assessment that the place contained ‘significant Aboriginal areas’ under the ATSIHP Act.
GML has been part of a team that has supported the GTC through the process including two applications under the Federal ATSIHP Act. We welcome the NSW government’s decision not to mine this important, unique and special cultural landscape.
We congratulate the GTC—their courage and persistence in the face of insurmountable opposition was inspiring. We feel privileged to have provided support.
