Case Study: The Rocks Interpretation Strategy
Home to some of Australia’s oldest European heritage, The Rocks area in Sydney is also a major tourist destination. The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority commissioned GML to develop an Interpretation Strategy for this important area in 2005.
GML put together a team of archaeologists, heritage interpreters, e-services specialists and events management and education providers. Initial planning for interpretation was guided by a reference group of prominent historians, environmentalist Jack Mundey and state and local government representatives. The team aimed to identify initiatives which would appeal to the wide variety of visitors to The Rocks.
At the conclusion of the project we prepared a sponsorship leaflet, Telling The Rocks Stories: Interpreting the Place and People, to guide future interpretive projects in The Rocks. The Sydney Harbour Foreshore Authority has since initiated several of the interpretive projects including large historic photo murals and illuminated lifeways signage.
