Heritage Interpretation

Heritage Interpretation

Interpretation is an essential component of the heritage conservation process, supporting the community’s recognition, knowledge and understanding of the history and significance of heritage places.

GML provides integrated interpretation planning advice to site managers, tourism operators, communities and government authorities and ranges from developing conceptual interpretation frameworks and storylines, through stakeholder and community consultation; research and text development; to implementation of signage, museum infrastructure, heritage trails, websites, multimedia production, soundscapes and art installations.

Interpretation Strategies

Analysis of the significance and history of heritage places provides a conceptual framework for the interpretive messages that are to be conveyed. Assessment of the site’s audience, its existing facilities and the media options lead to the development of interpretation strategies. GML’s experience in creating innovative interpretation strategies ranges from mine sites, power stations and lighthouses to amusement parks, city warehouses and church precincts.

Interpretation Plans

Building on the framework of Interpretation Strategies, Interpretation Plans provide detailed guidance to implement concepts through development of texts, artwork, installations, signage, soundscapes, etc. GML draws on the range of experience of its experts to create effective, imaginative plans tailored to the individual site.

Cultural Tourism Plans

Cultural tourism plans provide a logical framework for supporting linkages between distinctive local experiences and heritage places. Monitoring visitor impacts and experiences are key ingredients in sustainably managing cultural tourism processes long-term to benefit heritage places. GML’s experience includes identifying and assessing tourism opportunities and initiatives associated with heritage places and their communities.
