Case Study: La Perouse
Working collaboratively with the Office of Environment and Heritage, GML and Trigger have been commissioned to film a selection of Aboriginal stories focused on the La Perouse headland.
La Perouse has a long and deep Aboriginal history. While many stories have already been documented and are held in private and public collections, this project has been designed to record a range of traditional and contemporary stories that Aboriginal men and women want to share with visitors to La Perouse.
These stories reflect Aboriginal people’s continuing cultural connections to the land and its resources, and how people have responded to the changing circumstances of their lives in living memory.
Significant places in the landscape, growing up on the Mission, fishing, collecting shells for shellwork and making artefacts for sale to tourists are some of many stories that Aboriginal people have indicated they are keen to share.
GML has reviewed existing oral history and audio visual collections, and is working closely with the Office of Environment staff to encourage Aboriginal involvement in the project and to establish the best approach to recording their stories.
We plan to shoot the interviews on site with a film crew later this year.
