Case Study: Former Carlton and United Brewery Site

Case Study: Former Carlton and United Brewery Site

The Kent Brewery supplied beer to Sydney and Australia for over 170 years, before finally closing in 2005.  Like many great industrial sites, the brewery had a profound influence on its surroundings, fostering local businesses, shops and hotels, creating workers communities and expanding over neighbouring streets and buildings.

Purchased by Frasers Property, work commenced in 2007 to develop the Kent Brewery site into a new commercial and residential area at the south end of the Sydney CBD.  Some buildings will be retained and converted; others will be demolished and, eventually, a new suburb will be created in their place.

As part of this process, GML was commissioned to identify features of the brewery that could be salvaged and re-used in the new development.  From beer vats and malting tanks to signage and machinery, selected items that illustrate the brewery’s history were identified for collection and storage.  These items will, in time, be installed as interpretive features in the buildings, parks and open spaces of the area, bringing history, interest and a unique sense of place to its future residents.
