Case Study: Mawson’s Huts Historic Site
Mawson’s Huts Historic Site is internationally significant as one of only six surviving complexes from the ‘heroic period’ of Antarctic exploration at the end of the nineteenth century. It was the main base of the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-1914 led by Douglas Mawson.
GML’s exposure to the Antarctic cold started in 1996 when Geoff Ashley, Senior Associate, was asked to undertake a short reconnoitre before leading a conservation team to the site the following summer. This conservation project received an Honourable Mention in the 2000 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Heritage Awards.
In 2001 GML went on to prepare a conservation management plan for the Mawson’s Huts Foundation in consultation with the Australian Antarctic Division and the Australian Heritage Commission. Then in 2002 we provided advice and a works plan assessment for the Australian Antarctic Division, required under Australian law and the Antarctic Treaty.
GML continues to advise the Australian Government and the Mawson’s Huts Foundation; currently we’re advising on proposed expeditions for the site’s centenary. We’re proud to be associated with conserving Mawson’s Huts Historic Site—the work is a good model for collaborations between public and private sector organisations everywhere.
