Goldfield archaeology at Ballarat’s Government Camp — Classroom Activity Kit

An excellent introduction for junior students to the use of historical and archaeological evidence. Using actual information from a recent ‘dig’, the kit takes students on the same journey as the archaeologists who excavated the Government Camp site in the heart of Ballarat.

Students start by finding out how archaeologists date deposits and what they can learn from artefacts. Next the site is researched through historical documents, written accounts and maps. Finally it is time to excavate and students are shown what the site has revealed about life in Ballarat during the goldrushes.

The kit consists of 10 full-colour Student Booklets and one Teacher’s Booklet with photocopy masters.
Suitable for ages 11–15. Price $70 per kit (extra Student Booklets $5 each).

Using actual historical and archaeological evidence relating to the Cumberland Street site in The Rocks in Sydney, this activity kit is an ideal opportunity for students to evaluate the relative strengths of using historical and archaeological evidence.

While unravelling the life and times of resident convict and bigamist George Gibb, the kit gives senior students a real-world example of history and archaeology in practice.

The kit consists of 10 full-colour Student Booklets, one Teacher’s Booklet with photocopy masters and a CD ROM.

Suitable for ages 15+. Price $70 per kit (extra Student Booklets $5 each).

Archaeological Investigation Report

In 1994 Godden Mackay Logan carried out a major archaeological excavation of a city block between Cumberland and Gloucester Streets in The Rocks — the first urban enclave of British settlement in New South Wales.

It was one of the largest excavations ever conducted in Sydney: more than half-a-million artefacts and 46 separate buildings were uncovered. The results were substantial and revealed extensive information on life in The Rocks from c1790 to the 1950s.

The report integrates the archaeological analysis with historical research on the site, and outlines gains in our understanding and appreciation of the issues governing the lives of the early colonial, Victorian and twentieth-century inhabitants of the site.

The five volume report is $660, inclusive of GST. Limited stocks are available.
