Crane Lighter, ‘Poolya’, Sydney

Project Type:

Photographic Archival Recording

Client:

Sydney Ports Corporation

LGA: Sydney

To assist Sydney Ports Corporation in meeting its statutory obligations under the NSW Heritage Act 1977, GML prepared a Photographic Archival Recording of the Crane Lighter ‘Poolya’, consistent with the requirements for an item of Local significance.

A lighter is typically a flat-bottom barge used to transport goods to and from larger vessels over short distances. The Poolya was in service in Sydney Harbour for a period of 60 years and played a significant role in the Port of Sydney. Poor condition and high repair costs meant that the vessel was retired from service and subsequently decommissioned.

Whilst the Poolya was in dry dock, GML was able to undertake a comprehensive photographic survey and prepare an overview history of the Poolya prior to its removal from the Sydney Ports fleet. GML worked closely with Sydney Ports to deliver a tailored approach that met the statutory obligations required by a state authority.
